Food and Drinks to Avoid with your Invisalign

Invisalign is arguably one of the most popular ways to straighten your teeth. The treatment involves wearing a series of custom-designed, transparent plastic aligners over your teeth that exert pressure on them to move them into the correct position. Each Invisalign program is made custom to you, and aligners are worn in order for the allotted time period for the treatment program to be successful.

There are numerous reasons why Invisalign is so popular including:

- It is much more discreet than braces

- The aligners are more comfortable to wear than conventional braces

- You don’t need to visit your dentist as often since you won’t require adjustments to your braces

- You can clean your teeth more easily

- Your Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating and drinking

This last point is especially beneficial for many patients who don’t want to make compromises on their food and drink while undergoing treatment.

Eating and drinking with Invisalign

One of the best things about Invisalign is that your clear aligners are entirely removable, meaning that they can be taken out at mealtimes. This is a massive benefit compared to conventional braces which are permanent and therefore will be left in place while you eat. When you wear braces, there is a huge list of foods that you can no longer eat because of the damage that they could cause to your brace. This includes sticky, chewy and hard foods. You will also be advised to avoid consuming too much sugar as it is particularly hard to clean teeth properly while wearing braces.

While Invisalign makes eating during orthodontic treatment much easier, unfortunately, it doesn’t mean that you can just eat what you like while you are wearing your aligners. You must remove your aligners before you eat. Eating with them can damage them and prevent them from working effectively. Fortunately, it is simple to take them out and place them into the container provided during mealtimes. Then, if you can, brush your teeth properly before placing them back in as soon after your meal as you can. Remember that Invisalign aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours per day to be effective.

When your aligners are out, there are certain foods that you should continue to avoid since they could damage your improving teeth. These include spicy foods since they are often paired with acidic products that can be harmful to teeth, and particularly cold foods. This is because ice and ice cream can cause pain and sensitivity and, in some cases, even crack the teeth. Gum should also be avoided since the residue can become stuck on your aligners and can discolor them.

Drinking with Invisalign

It isn’t just food that you need to think about when wearing your aligners, you should also pay attention to the drinks that you consume. You can drink while wearing your aligners, but many people who are enjoying drinks with their meal won’t have their Invisalign in at this time, meaning that they will need to choose their drinks carefully. Unsurprisingly, water is the healthiest thing that you can drink. It washes away bad bacteria, particularly if you drink water that contains fluoride. Sugary and non-sugared sodas should be avoided, as should acidic fruit juices. Coffee is ok in moderation, as is alcohol, but you should ideally try and brush your teeth as soon as you can after consumption.

Smoking with Invisalign

Smoking is a habit that is bad for your general and dental health, but it can also have consequences for the appearance of your teeth. This is because nicotine turns teeth yellow and if you smoke when wearing aligners, these will gradually take on a yellow tint that could pass to your teeth and make your smile discolored.
