If you have teeth that are twisted, crooked, overlapping or have gaps between them, you may have been referred to see an orthodontic specialist or your dentist may recommend orthodontic treatment. These issues are far more than just cosmetic defects. Poor alignment of the teeth has also been shown to have a negative effect on oral health since teeth that are presented in this way are more likely to develop cavities and be affected by gum disease. This is because teeth that are poorly aligned tend to have areas that are impossible to reach using a regular toothbrush.
In the past, patients requiring orthodontic treatment only had one option for correcting their teeth – conventional braces. Made from metal and comprising of brackets and wires, these would apply pressure to the teeth and jaws to improve their position. Fortunately, orthodontic treatments have evolved considerably and today, there are other options. One of the most popular and effective is known as Invisalign.
What is Invisalign and how does it work?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment program that uses a series of custom-designed transparent plastic aligners to exert pressure onto the teeth and jaws to move them into a new and improved position. Their clear design helps to make them much more discreet than conventional braces. The aligners are worn over the top of your teeth and fit snugly to them thanks to their bespoke design. Each aligner creates constant but gentle pressure onto the teeth and jaws whilst you wear them. However, unlike conventional braces, Invisalign aligners are removable. This enables patients to take them out for mealtimes, ensuring that they can eat whatever they would like to without causing damage to the device. At the end of the meal, the aligners must be promptly placed back in. This is because the treatment program is based around the aligners being worn for a minimum of 22 hours each day and only be removed for eating and cleaning.
Another distinct benefit of Invisalign is that you don’t need to visit your provider for regular adjustments. Whilst your treatment will still be monitored at intervals when it is time for the next stage in your treatment you simply move onto using the next aligner in the series as specified. It is that simple. Some other advantages of choosing Invisalign for your orthodontic treatment include:
- Ease with which your aligners can be cleaned, using a toothbrush and toothpaste
- Improved oral hygiene since it is easier for you to keep your natural teeth clean as there are no brackets/wires to clean around
- Greater comfort throughout the treatment process
- Convenient treatment that you are in control of
- No compromises on the foods that you eat
- Confidence in your appearance during the treatment
Exactly how long your Invisalign treatment process will take will depend on the extent of the movement your teeth need to make to reach their new position. However, treatment times rarely take any longer than using traditional braces, with most patients completing their Invisalign program in under two years.
