The Benefits of Invisalign
We all want teeth that are perfectly straight and that meet exactly when we close our mouth. Fact is, very few people can obtain this look naturally. Overcrowding, gaps between our teeth, and even habits such as thumb sucking can all contribute to a myriad of alignment problems that leave us feeling embarrassed or even ashamed about the appearance of our smile.
Fortunately, there is a solution that can enable patients with even the most crooked or misaligned teeth to enjoy a straighter and more attractive solution – Invisalign.
Invisalign is a modern alternative to conventional orthodontic braces that is proving both highly successful and increasingly popular. This is because, while it still involves placing gentle force onto the teeth to get them to move into the desired positions, the design of the device to do this is completely unique.
Invisalign comprises of a series of transparent, soft, plastic aligners. These sit over the top of the teeth, encasing them inside completely, right down to the gum. Each aligner is created using cutting-edge mapping technology that takes the original position of your teeth and an improved image with a straighter smile, and maps the way that your teeth will need to move to achieve the new and improved smile. By wearing them in order, and for the recommended minimum of 22 hours per day, your teeth can gradually be guided into their new position, closing gaps and creating a straighter and more uniform smile.
Invisalign aligners must only be removed for eating and cleaning them and must be replaced directly after. Failing to wear the aligners for the allotted 22 hours per day can expedite the length of your treatment or even cause it to fail entirely. The length of the entire program will depend on the extent that your teeth need to be moved, and our provider will be able to give you an indication as to how long you can expect your Invisalign treatment to last. However, typically an Invisalign program takes a maximum of 24 months.
Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign offers patients a variety of unique benefits that cannot be obtained through wearing traditional braces. For these reasons, it is fast becoming the preferred choice of patients who have misalignment problems including gaps, twisted and crooked teeth, and issues with their bite. Some of these advantages include:
Invisalign aligners are made from clear plastic and once they are in place over your natural teeth, they are nearly impossible to spot. You can smile in photographs without showing a mouth full of wire and metal, and you won’t need to feel self-conscious or embarrassed when trying to talk to people face to face. This can make you feel more attractive and give you greater confidence and self-esteem.
Unsurprisingly, orthodontic braces aren’t the most comfortable thing to have fitted or to wear day in and out. Sharp metal edges, tight elastics and the semi-permanent adhesion to your teeth make braces unpleasant at best. However, Invisalign aligners are made from soft plastic that sits over the top of your teeth. There is no need for metal or for securing the aligner to your teeth. While they may feel funny at first, most patients adapt to wearing aligners very quickly.
Fewer compromises on what you can eat
One of the biggest problems with braces is that the brackets and wires make eating certain types of food impossible. Anything sticky or hard could get stuck in, or damage your brace, causing all manner of problems. For this reason, many people avoid certain foods when they wear braces. Fortunately, since Invisalign aligners can be removed for brief periods, you can take yours out to enjoy as many different foods as you like. Just make sure you brush your teeth before you put the aligner back on, as otherwise bacteria and food debris could become trapped underneath it.
Improved oral health
Invisalign also enables you to have better oral health. Trying to brush your natural teeth around the metalwork needed for braces can be extremely tricky and it is very easy to miss some of the small areas that have been made very hard to get to. This means that the health of your teeth might suffer. The good news is that Invisalign aligners can be removed entirely, enabling you to brush and floss your teeth as normal. There are fewer hard-to-reach areas making it possible to do a truly thorough job of keeping your teeth and mouth clean and in the best possible health.
