“I’ve been to a few dental offices trying to find the right fit. [At] most offices I always feel so judged about my teeth. But here I feel like I’m actually getting the care I need. Zero judgement. The dentists and dental assistants are amazing and seem to actually enjoy their work. Plus the front desk is always so helpful too. . .”
Gum recession or “receding gums” is a common problem with ramifications for your smile’s health as well as its appearance. When the root structure becomes exposed, the risk of tooth decay and other dental problems rises. You may also begin to see an uneven gum line, or your teeth may appear longer, more prominent – changing proportions that have an aging effect. At Ironwood Dental Care in Queen Creek, AZ Dr. Brent Stanley provides a solution: the pinhole surgery technique. Proven successful for our Queen Creek, AZ, patients, this procedure can restore your attractive, youthful-looking smile. The technique is quick and easy, and you can enjoy the results immediately.
About Pinhole Surgery
The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique was invented by a dentist, Dr. John Chao, who provided a minimally invasive alternative to traditional tissue grafting. Used for years to treat patients with severe gum recession, grafting surgery had a well-earned reputation as an unpleasant procedure. Pain, dietary restriction, and months of recuperation were a routine part of the process.
Pinhole gum surgery is a far easier procedure for patients. It is scalpel-free, requires no stitches, and pain and bleeding are very minimal. The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour, and many patients are back at work the next day. Within a week, your gums are fully healed, and you are free to enjoy your new, rejuvenated smile.
After this simple procedure, your treated gums will protect and support your teeth roots as they provide a more attractive appearance.
Because pinhole surgery is minimally invasive, patients can treat several teeth at one time. This is another advantage over tissue grafting, which has typically been performed in stages. The pinhole surgery technique is more efficient, and thus more cost-effective.
The Pinhole Surgical Process
Dentists must be specially trained to perform pinhole surgery, which requires unique surgical instruments. Dr. Brent Stanley is a qualified pinhole technique surgeon and regularly performs this procedure in our office. To begin, all of our cosmetic dentistry patients receive an initial exam, ensuring that their teeth and gums are healthy and ready for treatment. Gum recession is often caused by periodontal disease, a condition that can cause pain and sensitivity and eventually lead to tooth loss. Patients with active periodontal disease should receive treatment to resolve the condition before considering gum surgery.
For pinhole surgical treatment, patients first receive a topical anesthesia to numb the gum area. If desired, calming sedation options are also available at our practice, including nitrous oxide. Focusing on the gum tissue high above the teeth, the doctor uses special tools to create tiny “pinhole” points. The surface gum tissue is loosened and then gently pulled down into a healthier position, covering exposed tooth roots. To complete the process, Dr. Stanley inserts tiny collagen strips into the gums. This holds the tissue in the correct position for healing.
Besides protecting the tooth roots, the gum line plays an important role in the symmetry and beauty of your smile, creating a pleasing frame. After this simple procedure, your treated gums will protect and support your teeth roots as they provide a more attractive appearance.
