teeth whitening

Teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching, is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that removes tooth stains and discoloration on the surface of the teeth. Whitening can make teeth several shades whiter. The results of the procedure depend on what caused the staining and the severity of the discoloration. Brownish or yellowish teeth due to tea, coffee, or smoking can become four to five shades lighter after treatment. Gray teeth caused by pigmentation within the teeth can become two to three shades lighter with teeth whitening.

We offer two teeth whitening options for our patients.

We make customized mouthpiece trays for our teeth whitening patients. Customized trays are important because the correct fit optimizes the effectiveness of the whitening gel. The whitening gel has to be applied properly so as not to waste gel and to minimize any sensitivity on surrounding gums. Every syringe will last five to six applications (15 nights) and patients should take care not to overfill the trays.

The procedure can whiten all kinds of stains. External stains caused by tea, coffee, and smoking take the shortest amount of time to whiten. Internal stains caused by tetracycline, fluoride, and genetics may take longer. Teeth whitening cannot improve dead teeth. Plus, teeth whitening only impacts the surface of dental work (bridges, crowns, veneers, bonding, etc.).

In office or same day whitening is designed for those patients that want a more immediate whitening procedure. Whitening gel is applied to the teeth under the supervision of a dental assistant and monitored. Most patients will see an immediate result of several shades whiter. Custom, take-home bleaching trays are also made as part of this procedure for the patient to do touch up whitening in the future.
